Ocular Services

Ocular Imaging Center

The UPMC Vision Institute houses one of the most comprehensive ocular imaging programs in the country. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities give physicians detailed information about the eye’s structure and can detect many diseases in their early stages.

Ocular Motility

Ocular motility is the movement of the eye. Abnormal eye movements, such as nystagmus (involuntary shaking or wobbling of the eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), and amblyopia (lazy eye), can cause vision impairment and are typically diagnosed and treated during early childhood. The Vision Institute’s ocular motility service uses the latest technological and procedural advances to reduce or reverse the effects of these and other eye movement disorders.

The ocular photography service gives UPMC Vision Institute physicians the ability to utilize cutting-edge photography tools to diagnose certain ophthalmologic conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration. Using this technology, ophthalmologists can also document any changes to the eye over a period of time, providing them with a noninvasive way to track the effectiveness of treatments.

Ocular Trauma

The majority of eye injuries and trauma occur in and around the home. Many can be avoided with the use of protective eyewear. The Vision Institute’s ocular trauma service is dedicated to educating people about how eye trauma occurs and how to avoid many injuries. In addition, physicians use the latest treatments and methodologies to care for patients with vision-threatening eye injuries.
