Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship

Program Description

The UPMC Neuro-Ophthalmology clinical fellowship is AUPO-FCC compliant and provides specialized training in Neuro-Ophthalmology to an ophthalmologist or a neurologist who has successfully completed an accredited residency program in the US, or a comparable international residency. Graduates from comparable international neurology or ophthalmology residencies are welcome to apply; H1b VISA is preferred by our institution. We treat and diagnose rare and unique Neuro-Ophthalmologic disorders and provide clinical training with five fellowship-trained Neuro-Ophthalmologists: two faculty trained in neurology, and three ophthalmology-trained faculty. Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh is affiliated and has a Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology clinic, as well. Our division provides collaborative and integrated patient care with the Neurology, Neuroradiology, ENT, Strabismus, Oculoplastic, ER, Optometric, and Neurological Surgery departments. Salary is PGY-based. We currently do not offer surgical Neuro-Ophthalmology training but work closely with our Skull Base and Oculoplastic surgeons.

Goals and Expectations of Clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship:

-to acquire and expand the knowledge base and skill set necessary to diagnose and treat neuro-ophthalmic problems including but not limited to neurological, developmental, degenerative and systemic diseases which affect the ocular motor system and sensory visual pathway, including disorders of the retina, optic nerve, chiasm, optic tracts, radiations, and cortices.
- to participate daily in outpatient Neuro-Ophthalmology clinics at the newly constructed UPMC Vision Institute at Mercy Pavilion, as well as the Vision Institute at Eye and Ear, and support and educate residents in evaluating inpatient and emergency department consultations.
- to conduct and present research at national meetings (NANOS, ARVO, AAN, AAO), and to attend weekly ophthalmology grand rounds, weekly Neurosurgery Tumor boards, and quarterly Neuro-Ophthalmology clinical case and Journal Club conferences.
